157 - HM Chase Swanson

Gladstone

138 - HM Wyatt Forvilly

165 - #18 Jack Taylor

190 - #2 Trevor Thorbahn

215 - #2 Ben Wilson

Boyne City looks to have pretty decent depth.  They were district champs last year also.  However,  the hammers of Gladstone will make a matchup hard to win.

Projected winner:  Gladstone

Team Wrestling District 166

Host: Kingsford

Ishpeming Westwood

Kingsford

Menominee

Negaunee

Last Season:

285 - HM Preston Declark

138 - #18 Caleb Barstow

215 - #11 Kahne Clarke

285 - HM Henry Dobbins

Negaunee

106 - #4 Evan Asikainen

120 - HM Derek Potvin

150 - HM Peyton Black

Kingsford suffered a big loss when stud, Tegan Ray, moved out of state.  However, they still seem to have the most depth.  We see the Flivvers pulling this one out.

Projected winner:  Kingsford

Team Wrestling District 167

Host: Kalkaska

Kalkaska

Kingsley

Manistee

Traverse City St Francis

Last Season:

Semis: Kingley 46 Lake City 24

Semis: Kalkaska 54 Manistee 18

Manistee:  None

Traverse City St Francis

106 - HM Charlie Bertram

120 - #17 Luke Harper

138 - HM Dex Nance

285 - HM Ben Eckler

This was a hotly contested district last year.  This year Kingsley has the most ranked wrestlers.  I think it will be competitive again.

Projected winner:  Kingsley

Team Wrestling District 168

Host: Ogemaw Heights

Grayling

Lake City

Ogemaw Heights

Tawas

Last Season:

Semis:  Ogemaw Heights 45 Grayling 35

Finals:  Ogemaw Heights 57 Tawas 19

Grayling

106 - #6 Alex Moore

113 - HM Gavin Holmes

120 - #10 Owen Lewicki

138 - #12 Max Huspen

157 - #14 Jordan Peters

165 - #12 Ryan Stade

Lake City:  None

Ogemaw Heights

113 - #3 Roman Goulette

120 - #18 Charles Bruder

138 - #9 Jackson Ziegler

144 - HM Landon Lauria

150 - HM Peter Hennard

175 - #3 Connor Lambert

215 - #3 Calvin Marshall

Tawas

106 - HM Joey Kacir

150 - HM Sean Donaghy

Grayling gave Ogemaw Heights all they wanted last year in the district finals.  They enter this season with five ranked wrestlers.  However, Ogemaw brings back five ranked wrestlers of their own, including three in the top three.  I think Ogemaw might just have a bit too much firepower.

Projected Winner:  Ogemaw Heights

Team Wrestling District 169

Host: Reed City

Hart

Mason County Central

Reed City

Shelby

Last Season:

Semis:  Hart 52 Reed City 20

215 - #13 Abdel Lopez

285 - #2 Adrian Lara

Mason County Central: None

Reed City

126 - #11 Reed Longworthy

126 - HM Damon Langworth

150 - HM Gabe Wolverton

157 - #8 Andrew Kiaunis

175 - HM Ethan Phillips

215 - #17 Christopher Wolgamott

Shelby

106 - HM Antonio Cano

157 - #6 Jaylin Henderson

157 - #9 Brody Fessenden

Reed City is a very solid team and Shelby has a couple studs. Unfortunately for them they are in the same district as a loaded Hart team.

Projected winner:  Hart

Team Wrestling District 170

Host: Clare

Alma

Clare

Remus Chippewa Hills

Shepherd

Last Season:

Semis: Clare 41 Gladwin 33

Finals:  Remus Chippewa Hills 48 Clare 31

190 - #18 Liam Franklin

215 - HM Johnny Vertz

285 - HM Brayden Towne

Shepherd

132 #3 Micah Curtiss

215 - #16 Seth Saxton

Long time D3 Power Chip Hills should dominate this district as they have by far the deepest team.  Clare and Shepherd will win some matches, but not enough.

Projected winner: Remus Chippewa Hills

Team Wrestling District 171

Host: Essexville Garber

Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker

Essexville Garber

Midland Bullock Creek

Sanford Meridian

Last Season:

285 - #7 CJ Tetloff

Sanford Meridian

106 - HM Alex Sampson

120 - HM Brodie Pierce

144 - #11 Karson Yancer

175 - #4 Austin Bourassa

Sanford Meridian has been putting together some nice teams again.  Expect them to repeat with a larger margin of victory this time.

Projected winner:  Sanford Meridian

Team Wrestling District 172

Pinconning

120 - HM Alex Rivard

Standish-Sterling

157 - HM Christopher Spyker

175 - HM Andrew Savino

Projected winner:  Gladwin

Team Wrestling District 173

Host: Kent City

Grant

Kent City

Newaygo

Last Season:

Semis: Grant 65 Newaygo 18

Finals:  Grant 38 Fremont 34

138 - HM Trinden Worcester

165 - #15 Gavin Lamadine

Grant

113 - HM Antonio Santana

120 - HM Cameron Espinoza

132 - #9 Kashton Atwood

Kent City

113 - #15 Trevor McGuff

120 - #4 Sammy Anderson

132 - #5 Adam Hunter

138 - HM Jayden Loomis-Sandison

150 - #17 Jackson Carr

165 - #16 Logan Thompson

Newaygo

113 - HM Miles Ashcraft

Defending district champ, Grant, has some good wrestlers and could push Kent City, but I think the Eagles have too much firepower with five ranked wrestlers.

Projected winner:  Kent City

Team Wrestling District 174

Host: HOST NEEDED

Comstock Park

Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Grand Rapids West Catholic

Wyoming Kelloggsville

Last Season:

Semis:  GRCC 54 Kelloggsville 15

Grand Rapids West Catholic

138 - #14 Andrew Laperna

175 - #9 Collin Abram

Wyoming Kelloggsville

113 - HM Jeffrey Brown

144 - #15 Andy Lopez-Castro

GRCC has had some absolutely outstanding wrestlers lately and had a very competitive team last year.  They graduated several key wrestlers and have three studs coming back including #1 Dale Gant.  Expect them to develop some of their younger wrestlers and repeat as district champs.

Projected winner: Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Team Wrestling District 175

Host: Belding

Last Season:

Semis:  Tri County 38 Kent City 34

126 - #16 Camden Figley

132 - HM Xander Antor

150 - #6 Tristan VanTimmeran

175 - #19 Jacob Hawkins

190 - #16 Brenden Avery

There are a lot of tough wrestlers in district 175, but nobody has as much as the Vikings.

Projected winner:  Howard City Tri County

Team Wrestling District 176

Host: Muskegon Oakridge

Montague

Muskegon Oakridge

Muskegon Orchard View

Whitehall

Last Season:

Semis:  Whitehall 74 Orchard View 6

165 - #14 Camari Reese

215 - #15 Tom Klein

285 - #18 Connor Devries

Whitehall

106 - #14 Thomas Leeke

106 - HM Isaac O’Boyle

120 - #12 Cody Manzo

120 - HM Blake Wallace

132 - #14 Max Krukowski

138 - HM Kolten Weiler

150 - HM Colton Kyser

157 - #3 Liam Leeke

175 - HM Eason Wisniewski

215 - #6 Billy Darke

Montague and Orchard View both have very nice teams this year and would win districts in other areas, but Whitehall is just too deep and talented.  Several of the Viking’s HMs will likely turn into ranked wrestlers before the season is out.  I expect both teams to win some matches, but Whitehall will prove too tough.

Projected winner:  Whitehall

Team Wrestling District 177

Host: Dowagiac

Benton Harbor

Dowagiac

Hartford

Watervliet

Last Season:  Last season’s district 189

Semis: Coloma 1 Hartford 0

144 - #6 Cam White

157 - HM Jacob Villegas

Hartford

106 - HM Mason Whitman

165 - #13 Linken Birkhead

Watervliet

106 - HM JT Isbrecht

Even though the Dowagiac graduated two almost guaranteed pins at 215 and 285, they return a solid team and have a lot of young wrestlers.  Look for the Chieftains to move into this district and take over.

Projected winner:  Dowagiac

Team Wrestling District 178

Host: Buchanan

Berrien Springs

Buchanan

Niles Brandywine

Three Oaks River Valley

Last Season:  MHSAA switched this one up quite a bit as none of these teams were in district 178 last year .  We are going to put last year’s District 190 here.

Semis: Berrien Springs 48 Brandywine 35

Semis: Dowagiac 63 Buchanan 18

Finals: Dowagiac 51 Berrien Springs 25

Berrien Springs

215 - #10 Lucas Zeiger

Niles Brandywine

157 - HM Jack Perez

285 - #15 Drew Mckee

Three Oaks River Valley:  No ranked wrestlers at this time.

Not a lot of competition here.  The Bucks take it.

Projected winner:  Buchanan

Team Wrestling District 179

132 - HM Cesar Mendoza

144 - #4 Treydan Vanderkooi

157 - #4 Ryan Sparks

175 - #2 Rysten Williams

190 - #12 Dylan Ritsema

285 - #12 Ayden Oisten

132 - #10 Cooper Anderson

150 - #13 Vincente Garcia

175 - #15 Trevor Anderson

South Haven

144 - #14 Zayden Rowland

Hopkins is a program on the rise and they have some great individuals and a rock solid team, but they are not yet a match for the defending semi-finalist Allegan Tigers.

Projected winner:  Allegan

Team Wrestling District 180

Host: Constantine

Comstock

Constantine

Parchment

Last Season:  Switched from last year’s District 192

157 - #17 Bucky Cramer

175 - #18 Brock Warren

190 - #17 Matthew Davidhizar

The always strong Constantine Falcons return quite a few ranked kids once again and will dominate this district.

Projected winner:  Constantine

120 - #13 Gable Majcher

126 - #6 Chase Sopha

132 - #4 Kersten McClelland

144 - #9 Caiden Hackett

150 - HM Levi Frazier

285 - #11 Shawn Coarse

Defending state runner up, to nobody’s surprise, returns a wealth of talent and will be a formidable opponent once again.  Armada has some strong middleweights and will score some points, but not enough to challenge the Bulldogs.

Projected winner:  Yale

Livonia Clarenceville

138 - HM Ryan Nettles

157 - #13 Logan Elliot

175 - #12 Deryk Klein

This one is tough to predict.  Hazel Park was district champ last year, but will not repeat.

Projected winner: Detroit Voyageur College Prep

Team Wrestling District 184

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

190 - HM Lucas Bigelow

Richmond

126 - #13 Collin Lum

Richmond used to be the dominant force out of this district until Algonac has recently taken up the mantle.  Now with Algonac up to D2, look for Richmond to take back the district title although it will take a monumental effort because on paper, the Blue Devils do not have a lot of returning firepower.

Projected winner:  Richmond

157 - #7 Gavin Bodnar

165 - #2 Fred Hammond

165 - #11 Randy Loewen

215 - #5 Jake Hascall

Frankenmuth is not just a football school as they have a strong team.  However, LakeVille has just too much firepower led by phenom Fred Hammond but the Eagles do keep it close.  There are A LOT of ranked wrestlers in this district and the team district matches will have a big influence on the all important seeding of individual districts.

Projected winner: LakeVille

Birch Run once again has a nice team, but Montrose has an awesome team.  The Rams didn’t graduate much and returns the two things you need for greatness–studs and depth.

Projected winner:  Montrose

285 - #17 Samuel King

Adrian Madison advanced to the state finals last year after a very controversial finish against Williamston.  They move east this year, joining in this district D3 newbie Blissfield who moves up from D4.  There are terrific individuals in this district, but this year’s strongest team appears to be the Bluestreaks.  Madison had an incredibly senior dominated lineup and will be in a rebuild.

Projected winner: Ida

Napoleon moved out of this district, so it is more wide open.  Columbia Central is definitely a program on the rise.  The other teams have some nice pieces, but this is Columbia Central’s to lose.

Bronson joins this D3 district after being a long time power in D4 and the hammering vikings flex their muscle immediately.

On paper, this district is wide open.  Corunna beat Ovid-Elsie by three last year, and we think this district will be a dogfight again.  We could see any of the three winning it.  We will go with Laingsburg, who shows a little more depth at this point.

Projected winner:  Laingsburg

Leslie moves up from D4 and Napoleon draws northern teams this year.   Cascades foes Leslie and Napoleon battle it out for the title here with the Blackhawks taking the crown.

D3 stalwart Portland has moved to D2, opening this district up somewhat as they pushed Lakewood to the limit last year and returns quite a bit.  Delton Kellogg moves up to D3 from D4 and brings some outstanding wrestlers.  There will be some great wrestling in this district, but returning semi-finalist Lakewood will walk away with the hardware.

Projected winner: Lake Odessa Lakewood
