Team Previews 25/26

Division 1 Team Preview

Any preview of Division 1 wrestling in the state of Michigan must start and end with Detroit Catholic Central.   They were once again incredibly dominant at team state last year, outscoring their opponents 153-48 and defeated powerhouse Davison 50-18 in the finals.  The Shamrocks graduated two state champions in upper weight studs Lee Krueger and Connor Bercume, but they return two two time state champions in Wyatt Lees and Grayson Fuchs.  They return a total of seven state placers along with one additional state qualifier.  Until someone changes it, DCC will be the team to beat in D1.  I expect them to reload the weight classes vacated by graduation and be formidable once again.

Unfortunately for wrestling fans in Michigan seeking state title drama, the race seems to be always for second place.

Davison made a nice run to the state championship match under first year coach Jason Mester, only to fall to DCC 50-18.  Davison had three state runners-up last year and return one in #2 ranked Julius Pacheco.  The Cardinals have two wrestlers ranked #1 in preseason in Brandon Glisson and Calvin Martz.  They also have three preseason #4's in Steve Vaughn, Tobias Pacheco, and Cameron Savage.  They also had a huge transfer, picking up #6 Bryce Holt from Romeo.   Having two other ranked wrestlers gives Davison some serious firepower and we will see them challenging for the final mat at team states.

Clarkston gave DCC one of the best matches in recent years in Kalamazoo, falling only 39-25.  Graduated are 120 pound state champion Archer Anderson and the runner up in Preston Lefevre, but they return four wrestlers ranked in our preseason top six, headlined by #2 Nathaniel Carter and #3 Trey Setter.  They have six wrestlers ranked in the top 12.   They return quite a few other solid wrestlers, and the Wolves mat room has been producing state champions lately, so we expect them to make a great run at team state once again.

After finishing runner-up in 2024, Hartland lost to Clarkston in regionals 42-25 in 2025.  Will the Eagles return to Kalamazoo?  We would not bet against them.  They return five wrestlers ranked in the preseason top five including state champions Dallas Korponic and Bohdan Abbey.  Jase Sensor (#3), Ashton Jewell (#4), and Joseph Capellano (#5) will also be hammers for Eagles.  In addition to that, Hartland returns four more ranked wrestlers and three honorable mentions.  We predict Hartland returns to team state and pushes DCC with their high end firepower.

After losing to Davison 34-33 in the quarterfinals in 2024, Brighton lost another heartbreaker to the Cardinals in the semifinals last year 32-31.  The Bulldogs have 13 wrestlers ranked in the preseason which ties DCC for the most.  Jameson Wood is preseason #2 and is joined by hammers #3 Bronson Shinkonis, #3 Xander Courneya, and #3 Sullivan Haas.  Brighton just may be as good as anyone in the state outside of DCC.

Temperance Bedford was the 5th seed for the second consecutive year and gave us another great 4-5 matchup, falling 36-35 to Clarkston.  The Kicking Mules seem the most hard hit by graduation, but do return six ranked wrestlers and two honorable mentions.  They will be led by #2 Zach Miracle.

The Rockford Rams were once again at state last year after edging Hudsonville in regionals.  They were seeded 6th and gave #3 seed Davison a good match before falling 42-27.   The Rams graduated state champion Braylenn Aulbach, but return #1 Layne Martin and two #2 ranked wrestlers in Liam Fitzpatrick and Logan Hammingh.  Five other ranked wrestlers give the Rams a very strong team.  They have a great shot to be in the same position or better this coming season.

Macomb Dakota qualified as the 7th seed for the second consecutive year and lost a lopsided match to Brighton.  Although #2 Carl Nihranz returns, along with three other ranked wrestlers, I don't see Dakota being quite as strong, but they could make their way to Kalamazoo once again.

Perennial power Oxford ended up in the same regional as Davison and fell 37-29.  They return studs #2 Gavin Lewis and #5 Liam Samborski along with four other ranked wrestlers and will be a tough out as a solid, balanced team.

Hudsonville pushed Rockford hard and lost 36-28 in regionals, but graduation losses hit hard and they return only one top 10 wrestler in #10 JJ Potts and three other ranked wrestlers.

Romeo had a nice run to Kalamazoo and their prize was a first round matchup with DCC in the dreaded 1-8 round.   However, they return pieces that makes us believe they can do it again and get a higher seed.  It starts with #1 Thomas Jaynes.  #5 Owen Perry, and #8 Nico Adamo will lead the Bulldogs.

Grand Ledge looks like a dark horse on paper even though they lost big to Brighton in the regional semifinals last year.  They return #1 Logan Tollison at 285 and two #2 ranked wrestlers in Eben Abdo and Ashton Delaney.  They have eight additional ranked wrestlers making them one of the tops in the state regarding preseason ranked wrestlers.

The always tough Westland John Glenn will be led by #4 Kyrin Dawson and #5 Franklin Hernandez in the 2025 campaign. They will be joined by four other ranked wrestlers along with four additional honorable mentions giving the Falcons another deep lineup.

Division 2 Team Preview

Lowell has been dominating D2 Wrestling for more than a decade straight with an incredible 11 consecutive state championships.  Is a 12th straight championship a foregone conclusion or will they be seriously challenged this year?  Let’s dig in and take a look.

Graduating are former state champions Jackson Blum, Owen Segorski, and Casey Engle.  The Red Arrows have one returning state champion in Jarrett Smith which seems low for Lowell, but they do have Carson Blum return who lost to Smith in the championship match.  They return three #3 ranked wrestlers in Mason Saylor, Logan Dawson, and Brayon Meeuwsen.  Lowell also returns 2 #5's in Cole Chichock and Seth Harvey and a #6 in Cody Foss.  On top of that, they have six additional ranked ranked wrestlers!  On paper, that lineup will be unbeatable in D2 this Spring.  And Lowell does Lowell things, and those lower ranked wrestlers will be competing with anyone in March.  It should be mentioned that RJ Boudro has left for Grand Valley and a new coach, Kyle Slocum, will lead the Red Arrows.  Prep Wrestling does not expect a drop off with the new coaching hire.

Three Rivers burst onto the D2 scene in 2024 and they have had undefeated regular seasons the past two years.  They returned a tremendously strong team last year as they returned all but one key wrestler and got 45-1 Louis Smith back from injury.  They were undefeated in duals and won every tournament, including the Freeland Tournament over Freeland.  Despite that, Three Rivers only received the #4 seed, behind Freeland and New Boston Huron which was a huge storyline at team state last year.  Many folks, including Prep Wrestling thought they should have been #2 or, at worst, a #3 seed.  This will be a very interesting year to see if Three Rivers can sustain greatness as a program and be able to obtain a higher seed.   Returning are the Smith boys, Louis #4 190 and Jaxon #3 215 to lead the Wildcats. #4 Ethan Moreland returns as does two #7's in Evan Haper and Braylon Faile.  They return two other ranked wrestlers and two more honorable mentions, giving them a very strong team; but not clearly better or worse than last season.

The other big story in D2 was Fowlerville's awesome run to the D2 finals as a #7 seed.  The Gladiators started the season unranked and continued to improve and rise in the rankings all season.  They defeated #2 Freeland by 11 points and #3 New Boston Huron by 13 before running into the buzz saw that is Lowell.  Returning are the O'Neil brothers in the upper weights with #1 Layne at 215 and #6 Liam at 285.  Brayden Packer is the #1 190 and Brock Foster is #6 at 175 giving them the top upper weights in the state.  They have three other ranked wrestlers and two other honorable mentions, giving the Gladiators a phenomenal returning team.

Greenville brought a good team to Kalamazoo and earned a #5 seed, but lost 47-19 to Three Rivers.  They return six ranked wresters and three honorable mentions, which gives them a very good team and worthy to return to team state.  However, they do not return a ton of high-end firepower and they will have to make great strides to make it to the second day of state.

Freeland is a very similar place as Greenville.  Both teams consistently make it to team states and both lost in the first round last year.  Freeland has six returning ranked kids and two honorable mentions, which makes them a strong team, but they do not currently have the depth or enough top end talent to carry them.  They will be led by #4 215 Bringham Smith.

New Boston Huron wrestled well in Kalamazoo and made the rest of the state take notice of this long-time strong program.  Although they graduated state runner up Drew Ladach, the Chiefs return nine ranked wrestlers led by #2 Daniel Gemmel.   Nathan Matsos, Jason Downs, Cayden Banko, and Braydon Hall are also hammers returning for Huron.  Seeing how much they improved last year and how many studs are returning, we are picking the Chiefs to have a great year.

Linden had a nice run to Kalamazoo and lost 45-24 to New Boston Huron.  They return four ranked wrestlers which isn't a lot, but seven honorable mentions, which will give them some depth.

Mason was an outstanding team last year who lost a 36-34 heartbreaker to Fowlerville at districts.   That was the closest match Fowlerville had until the finals against Lowell, which showed just how good Mason was.   Although hit by graduation, Mason returns a strong lineup led by #1 Dylan Granger.  They return six other ranked and two honorable mentions, putting them right in the pack of contenders.

Bay City John Glenn had a very good team last year and return seven ranked wrestlers and one honorable mention.  They will be led by #1 Jonathan Ford, #3 Izaak Kukulski, and #5 Edward Smith along with two #7's.  Even though they may not be as deep as some teams, their top end talent is impressive.

It is hard to have a D2 team preview and not talk about Gaylord.  The Blue Devils do not return a lot of depth but they will boast #1 Jaron Bensinger and #1 Zane Willobee.  If some of their younger guys can rise up, they could make another run to Kalamazoo.

Portland is a very good team that has made the jump to D2.  They will be led by #3 Brad Meyers and #3 Gunnar Williams.  Branlun Simon, Landon Lanz, and Griffin Opperman are also hammers that will make noise in D2.  This team is deep and talented enough to make a deep run in March and will add some depth to D2.

Algonac has also made the jump from D3 to D2.  They have been very good in D3, but have been hit with recent graduation losses and may not be as good as recent years.  The Muskrats will be led by #3 Julian Walker.

Williamston is another deep team that is making the move to D2 from D3.  They have a lot of depth, but not a lot of top end talent and they also have replaced Mason in Fowlerville's district, so this is not the year for them to advance very far.

Cedar Springs has been a team to watch in D2 for some time now and does return two #1 ranked wrestlers in Quintan Cassiday and Luke Egan and #3 Tyler Parmeter.  They have two other ranked kids and one other honorable mention, but will need some help to be a contender.

Division 3 Team Preview

If we said Dundee rolled to another D3 state title, that would be a massive understatement.  It is hard to describe just how dominant Dundee was last year--especially at the finals.  They won by a combined score of 221-6 including 74-0 over Yale in the championship.  That has to be a state record.  Can anyone slow down this Dynasty?  What year will some other team finally knock them off?  A team that dominant would have to have had heavy graduation losses.  Could this possibly be the year?  The answer is absolutely not but let’s take a look anyway.  The Vikings qualified 14 wrestlers to individual state and placed 13.  They had a whopping 8 state champions.  They had 3 state runner ups, two of which lost to teammates in the finals.  They had 2 additonal 3rd place finishers and only 1 DNP.  The crazy thing is they had only 1 senior there and that was state champ Kole Katschor.  9 of Dundees representatives at state were juniors and this class is unbelievable.  However, the Vikings did lose state champs as Jeremy Amrhein (Manchester) and Wyatt Burns (Springport) transferred out and will bring their considerable talents to other teams.  It will not matter though as Dundee is loaded with talented underclassmen.  The following returning wrestlers are preseason #1:  Mason Katschor, Cosby, and Donny Beaufait.  Coming in at #2 are Haydn Nutt, Bryan Sterling, and Avery Lane.   Once the weight classes are settled, expect those #2's to move up to #1.  We expect all 6 to top the podium individually.  Dundee also has many other very good wrestlers waiting in the wings and Prep expects Dundee to be just as dominant despite losing 2 state champs to transfer and another to graduation.

Yale had another very nice run to Kalamazoo last year including a very memorable 32-31 win over Algonac in the regional final.  The Bulldogs return quite a bit from that team. They return 7 preseason ranked wrestlers led by #2 Mackey Mcclelland, #3 Logan Rhodes, #4 Kersten McClelland, and #6 Chase Sopha.  They have 2 honorable mentions giving them 9 strong wrestlers which is a great start as they chase the final mat again.

Allegan returned to glory last year after not being a real factor in D3 for a decade or so.  They were preseason unranked and they ended up making the semifinals, winning the 4-5 match 45-24 over Hart.  Their strength was their depth and that will be strength again as they gradual only 2 key wresters, both of whom were both state qualifiers.  Allegan returns 9 ranked wrestlers and 1 honorable mention making them a formidable opponent this season. The Tigers will be led by #2 Rysten Williams and #4's Treydan Vanderkooi and Ryan Sparks.

Lake Odessa Lakewood continues to make a name for themselves on the wrestling mat as they continue to shine after decades of accomplishment.  The earned a spot at Kalamazoo again last year as the 6th seed and pulled the upset over #3 Whitehall 38-28.  They did graduate long time hammer Joel Simon who was 215 state runner up last year.  The Vikings will be led by #2 Bryson Boucher and #3 Vincent Stamm but they only return 5 ranked wrestlers and 3 honorable mentions which is slightly less than some of the other contenders, but we expect great growth out of the Lakewood program because it happens every year.

Whitehall is a program on that has been consistently on the rise and is now an established D3 power.  All everything Gavin Craner who finished last year as an undefeated state champion has graduated, leaving a big hole in the Vikings lineup.  The current squad will be led by #3 Liam Leeke and #6 Billy Darke but those are the only Whitehall wrestlers ranked in the preseason top 10.   They do have 5 ranked wresters and 5 honorable mentions giving them plenty work with and they have an outstanding coaching staff.  Prep expects the Whitehall to be a tough out in the 2026 post season.

Constantine has been a contender for decades and was very good last year but was knocked off by Allegan as the Tigers have returned to prominence.  The Falcons return a solid team led by #3 Bear Geibe and #5 Graysin Hopp.  They return 4 other ranked wrestlers with one at #14 and three others at #17.  As of now this is not enough firepower to overtake Allegan in the region but a lot can change over the course of the season.  It is a solid base of wrestlers and Constantine is a proud program.

Hart seems to be a school on the rise in many sports though they have had tough wrestlers for years.  The Pirates advanced to Kalamazoo for the second straight year and earned the 5 seed.  Although Hart graduated state runner up Alex Hicks, the return a wealth of talent and will have depth.  They will be led by #2 Adrian Lara and #4 Kole Thomas.  The Pirates have 8 ranked wrestlers and 4 honorable mentions, giving them one of the deepest teams in the field.  They also have top end wrestlers to go with their depth and that is the formula for advancing in March.

Ogemaw Heights is always solid and earned the #8 seed in Kalamazoo last year, only to draw Dundee.  The Falcons did earn the distinction of the only team that scored on Dundee finals weekend as they were able to put up 6 points.  Fresh off of a football run that nearly saw them reach Ford Field, they return stud football players in Calvin Marshall #3 and Connor Lambert #3.  Rounding out the #3 ranked wrestlers is Roman Goulette. They return 2 other ranked wrestlers with 2 other honorable mentions which gives the Falcons a very good team but not necessarily a great team.

Although they lost badly to Lakewood in the Regional Finals, Prep really likes the returning line-up of this Montrose team.  They return practically their entire team led by #3's Noah Szwed and Owen Perior, #7 Gauge Vincke, and #8 Brysen Briggs.  They return 9 ranked wrestlers and 2 honorable mentions which puts them in strong contention for Kalamazoo.

The best D3 team not in Kalamazoo for the second straight year was Algonac.  After losing 32-31 in the regional finals to Yale, the Muskrats had to watch Yale go all the way to state runner up.  However, Algonac, along with stalwarts Portland and Williamston, have moved to D2 which changes the landscape somewhat.

Leslie is a solid team that moves up to D3 also.  The Blackhawks have 6 ranked wrestlers and 2 honorable mentions and they have some top end talent in #4 Grason Weber and #8 Carter Foster and #8 Carter Franklin.

Otisville LakeVille makes the jump to D3 after being D4 power and brings a very strong team.   They have seven ranked wrestlers led by #2 Fred Hammond, #5 Andrew Tucker, #5 Jake Hascall and #7 Gavin Bodnar.  They also have 4 honorable mentions giving the Falcons a formidable lineup.  They will be a force in D3 this year and D4 definitely got easier.

Adrian Madison had a miraculous run to Kalamazoo and wrestled well with a very good senior class.  However, they return only #7 Paul McClure as a ranked wrestler.  It will be a rebuilding year at Madison as Prep picks Ida to knock them off in districts.

Birch Run returns 4 ranked wrestlers with 4 honorable mentions which is a great nucleus.  They have #5's Ethan White and Kaelen Harrington.  If they fill some gaps, they will be a very tough team and may be able to push Montrose for the District title.

Division 4 Team Preview

The mighty Hudson Tigers will be aiming for the 5th straight state title.  Hudson has dominated the last three years with their closest title decided by 20 points this past season against Martin/Climax-Scotts.  LCAA foe Clinton dropped back to D4 last year to challenge Hudson and they were the last team not named Hudson to win D4, but they lost 47-18 in the semifinals.  Is Hudson at all vulnerable or are they going to definitely run the table again?Hudson graduates 2x state champ Julien Kimling, state runner-up Jake Pickford, and SQ Barron Mansfield.  Normally those would be profound losses, but this is Hudson.  They return 3-time state champ in Nicholas Sorrow who will going for the prestigious 4x state champ club.   Also returning is sophomore defending state champ Beckett Campbell who also has a great shot a the 4x state champ club.  Not only are those two ranked #1, but so is Colt Perry.  Malachi Marshall comes in at #3 as does Jaxton Kimling with Chase Clark at #4 and Kenny Sledge at #5.   Side note:  Perry, Campbell, Marshall, and Sledge were also stud football players who led the Tigers to a runner up finish at Ford Field in November.  Hudson has 12 ranked wrestlers and Prep expects them to be even better in 2026.  So no.  Nobody will challenge the Hudson Tigers for the title in D4.

It is worth mentioning that Lakeville, Leslie, and Bronson are three very good wrestling team that will be wrestling Division 3 and will not be a factor in D4 this year.

St Louis had a terrific team last year once again and made the semifinals before falling to MCS in a great match 30-25.   The Sharks lost five key seniors including studs Collin Kuhn and Genaro Soto.  However, they were a deep team, and they look to be outstanding again as they return state champion Owen Fogel and defending state runner up and current #1 Drew Challender.   Alex Rodriguez checks in at #2, Layton Haworth #4, Karson Tweh #6, and Collin Grollimund is #8.  The Sharks have nine total ranked wrestlers and some major top end talent and are definitely poised to make a run at the final mat in Kalamazoo.

The biggest story in D4 is Martin/Climax-Scotts becoming Martin and Climax-Scotts.  They wrestled extremely well in Kalamazoo, edging an outstanding St. Louis team for the right to wrestle Hudson in the finals where they put up a good showing, losing 45-25 to 5-time state champs.  The original team lost six senior studs in Logan Gilbert, Sam Bleeker, Jack Bagwell, Jake Tomyslak, Jayce Ritchie, and Cole Reitz.   So even if they co-op hadn't ended, MCS would not have been a strong contender for the final mat again.

Clinton will remain in D4 after bowing out in the semifinals last year to Hudson.  They graduated state champion Braylon Long and very good 285 Hamza Rafferty, but have a lot of firepower returning, starting with defending state champion Bryce Randolph.   Joining him to lead the Red Wolves is #3 Cliff Jones, #5 Zack Taylor, #8 Brock Worden, and #9 Gradyn Whelen.   Clinton matches St. Louis with 12 ranked wrestlers.  It would be a great match between these two stalwarts.

Union City was hit hard by graduation with losses of Logan Mears, Alex Boyer, Aidan Taylor, Mason Hawthorne and Montana Connell.  The do have some pieces coming back but have a lot of work to do to match the success of the 24/25 team.  They will be led by #7 Mitchell Graham and #8 John Olmsted.  They have six ranked wrestlers and one honorable mention.

Manchester seems to be one of the consistently underrated teams in D4.  It is likely because they are in the same area as Clinton and Hudson, but they are a team to be respected year in and year out.  This year will be no different as they have three preseason defending state champions and #1 ranked wrestlers and that is a phenomenal start.  Sammy Stewart and Blake Sloan are names we expect, but the Flying Dutchmen have landed former Dundee Viking and D3 state champion in Jeremy Amrhein.  Even Manchester graduated a very good senior class, they have five other ranked wrestlers so the Dutchmen can do some bumping with their studs and make life tough on anyone in the state.

Riverview Gabriel Richard graduated Sebastian Martinez who won is 4th straight state title and was one of the most dominant high school wrestlers in Michigan history.   The 2025/2026 version of Gabriel Richard in intriguing and Prep believes will be sneaky good after losing to semifinalist Clinton 33-32 at Regionals.  The Fighting Irish return defending state champion Jordan Zambon to anchor the lower weights in a big way.  They also return #2 Luke Harrington, #2 Max Riney, and #3 Andrew Frazier giving them the major star power they will need.  They have 10 ranked wrestlers giving them a deep team as well.  Nobody will want to wrestler the Pioneers in March.

Roscommon had a nice run to Kalamazoo last year, but ultimately drew the #8 seed which gave them mighty Hudson.  The Bucks return a great nucleus in #2 Crew Tyler, #2 Walker Borchers, and #4 Toby Bigford.  They return five ranked wrestlers and three honorable mentions and have a shot at returning to Kalamazoo.

Watch out for Springport this year!  They have had always had good teams and excellent individuals, but this may be their year.  State champion Wyatt Burns has transferred in from Dundee and that is a huge lift.  Not only because of the guaranteed six points, but also the skill and competition he brings to the room.  The Spartans also return highly ranked Kaden Sizemore at #3 and Mason Thurber as #4.  They have 10 ranked wrestlers and one honorable mention.

Benzie Central has been a very good team in D4 for quite a while although they were surprised by Mancelona in the regional semifinals a year ago 37-35.   Benzie does return a strong team led by #3 Dayne Gillison, #4 Lane Sanchez, and #7 David Wenkel.  The Huskies return five ranked wrestlers and two honorable mentions.

Gobles is a team to look out for in D4.  Gone is 55-4 and 3rd place state placer Mason Mansfield, but this team returns a lot.  Devin Doorlag and Colton Colingsworth are both preseason #5 while standouts Brody Marshall and Finn Carling are #5.   #6 Danny Timms rounds out the highly ranked Tigers wrestlers and the total ranked is nine.  Gobles will surprise some people this season.

Decatur lost to state runner up Martin by a large margin in the regional final and although they graduated Thor Baker and Carson Shugars, they return the bulk of their lineup.  The boast two #2 wrestlers in Kolten Burns and Rowan Bradford.  They will also be led by #3 Aidan Wiggins and #4 Brody Mead.  This is some major top end firepower and they will combine that with a total of eight ranked wrestlers and one honorable mention.  The Raiders will be tough team in 25/26.

Pine River is a team that we expect to be back in a big way after being a fixture at Team State.  They were extremely young last year and they return 10 ranked wrestlers which put them right in the thick of things although many of them are not highly ranked.  The Bucks will be led by #2 Jericho Holmes and #5 Josh Rizor.  We watched Holmes compete this summer and we expect him to be a matchup nightmare anywhere near his weight class.

Lakeview had a season to remember last year knocking off long time powers Pine River and Hesperia on their way to the Regional Finals.  Graduated are state champ Landen Johnsen and runner up CJ Copeland and they will be tough to replace.  The Wildcats will be led by #3 Lucas Vail.  Lakeview only has three ranked wrestlers coming back, but they have eight honorable mentions giving them the chance at another special season.

Charlevoix had a great run to Kalamazoo only to be matched up with St. Louis in the first round.  The Rayders accomplished this without the services of defending state champion Brady Jess who missed the entire season due to injury.  This year they will be led by #2 Sawyer Blaszczyk, #5 Collin Jess, and #7 Ryan Glass.  Charlevoix has 5 ranked wrestlers and 2 honorable mentions and has the feel of a program on the rise.
