Williamston Jim Mooney Preview

Williamston Jim Mooney Classic

If it wasn’t for the Hudson Super 16 taking place an hour to the south, the Williamston Jim Mooney Classic would be the toughest tourney around.  This tournament is loaded in its own right.  We here at Michigan Prep decided we would take a shot at seeing how this tournament will play out this weekend.  The teams attending are as follows: Allendale, Charlotte, Clinton, Corunna, Dowagiac, Eaton Rapids, Lansing Everett, Grand Ledge, Howell, New Boston Huron, Newaygo, Northville, Olivet, Portland, Potterville, Shepherd, Southgate Anderson, Lansing Waverly, Williamston, Yale, Zeeland West

Note: Records are before this week’s dual meets

106

D2 #11 Caleb Frazier (New Boston Huron) 20-7

D2 #14 Drew Holevac (Eaton Rapids) 34-3

D3 #4 Justice Harding (Williamston) 22-0

Alex Duprest (Grand Ledge) 23-9

Sam Wilhelm (Southgate Anderson) 25-5

Pierce Moran (Yale) 16-9

Cole Trierweiler (Howell) 17-11

Grady Lanz (Portland) 10-5

This weight is a strong way to start off the tournament.  This weight has three ranked wrestlers and three others with strong resumes.  All of Frazier’s losses are to top 5 kids.  We predict that Harding will pick up his first high school loss.  Holevac could also stand on top of the podium.  He pinned Duprest earlier this season.  However, Duprest is dangerous and can beat anyone.  He has pinned several top kids already this year.

Prep Prediction:

  1. Frazier (New Boston Huron)

  2. Harding (Williamston)

  3. Holevac (Eaton Rapids)

  4. Duprest (Grand Ledge)

D2 #8 Jaxon Ramos (Allendale) 20-4

D2 #18 Aiden Chavez (Zeeland West) 21-1

D3 #3 Mackey Mcclelland (Yale) 23-0

D3 #8 Branlun Simon (Portland) 18-3

D3 #11 Shai Curtiss (Shepherd) 6-1

D4 #2 Zack Taylor (Clinton) 23-1

D4 #13 Wyatt Cooley (Clinton) 19-10

Connor Wallace (Howell) 20-6

Jackson Brown (Grand Ledge) 13-6

Isaiah Keck (Waverly) 22-9

JJ Hackworth (Eaton Rapids) 29-8

There are six kids at this weight with four losses or less.  Really strong and deep weight class.  Mackey McClelland is looking incredibly strong this season.  He has put the hammer to many outstanding kids.  His 23-0 record is no fluke.  Jaxon Ramos is another that has claimed many big wins.  His losses are also all good losses.  Aiden Chavez only has one loss on the season to Aiden Segovia from Holland.  Zach Taylor also only has one loss (picked up his second on Wednesday).  Banlun Simon has also wrestled really well this season, but maybe lacks the quality wins that some others have.  Connor Wallace and Jackson Brown could also make some noise.  As with all the weights, I am curious to see how Eaton Rapids does.  This could be their coming out party of sorts.  Their kids have great records, but we are very curious to see how they do against this type of competition.

Prep Prediction:

  1. Mackey Mcclelland (Yale)

  2. Jaxon Ramos (Allendale)

  3. Aiden Chavez (Zeeland West)

  4. Zack Taylor (Clinton)

D2 #8 Nick Wade (Eaton Rapids) 35-2

D2 #15 Dante Ramos (Allendale) 22-3

D2 #17 Habibullah Majedi (Southgate Anderson) 30-3

D3 #3 Landon Sopha (Yale) 26-2

D3 #7 Landon Lanz (Portland) 20-1

D3 #10 CJ Miller (Williamston) 18-7

D3 #18 Keegan Gray (Onsted) 15-7

Lane Moore (Charlotte) 19-1

Tucker Harkins (Grand Ledge) 21-10

Justin Sanchez (Zeeland West) 17-7

There are six kids at this weight with three losses or less!!  That is insane.  There will be some good kids left off the podium.  Nick Wade brings in a 35-2 mark, an outstanding record for the standout Freshman.  He will have a chance to avenge one of his losses Saturday as Habibullah Majedi from Southgate Anderson won an earlier season match.  Majedi himself sports an outstanding 30-3 record.  Dante Ramos from Allendale has been outstanding.  He has beaten some really good kids and only has three losses on the year.  Landon Sopha from Yale only has two losses and has been unbelievable all season.  Throw in Landon Lanz from Portland and Lane Moore from Charlotte, who only have one loss each, and this is a crazy deep weight.

Prep Predictions:

  1. Landon Sopha (Yale)

  2. Habibullah Majedi (Southgate Anderson)

  3. Nick Wade (Eaton Rapids)

  4. Dante Ramos (Allendale)

D2 #5 Payton Paguada (Allendale) 22-3

D2 #8 Daniel Gemmel (New Boston Huron) 27-2

D2 #10 Ronnie Silveira (Allendale) 22-5

D3 #15 Chase Sopha (Yale) 16-3

Toby Buckland (Grand Ledge) 23-10

Brayden Thorn (Eaton Rapids) 27-9

Samuel Taylor (Zeeland West) 19-7

Justin Niyubushobozi (Waverly) 21-8

This weight is very strong at the top, but many will fight to get a spot on the podium.  Payton Peguada from Allendale has been outstanding this year.  He already has a slew of big name victories.  Daniel Gemmel (New Boston Huron) could say the same.  These two look to be on a finals collision course.  Having something to say about that will be Chase Sopha (Yale) or Ronnie Silveira (Allendale), both having fantastic seasons.  Toby Buckland (Grand Ledge) also is very dangerous and is looking to get a spot on the podium.

Prep Predictions:

  1. Payton Paguada (Allendale)

  2. Daniel Gemmel (New Boston Huron)

  3. Ronnie Silveira (Allendale)

  4. Chase Sopha (Yale)

D1 #5 Eben Abdo (Grand Ledge) 16-1

D2 #5 Jason Downs (New Boston Huron) 27-4

D3 #4 Kersten McClelland (Yale) 27-2

D3 #18 Caden Kittendorf (Williamston)13-8

Austin Ulberg (Zeeland West) 18-6

Isaiah Keith (Charlotte) 15-3

Eben Adbo has been outstanding this year.  His only loss is to D1 phenom, Archer Anderson.  He has a huge win over Colin Kuhn (St. Louis) as well.  Jason Downs (New Boston Huron) has had a great year also.  All of his four losses are to quality kids.  Kersten McClelland has been incredible.  He has a ton of big victories under his belt.  We think this will be a three horse race, with other battling it out for fourth.

Prep Predictions:

  1. Kersten McClelland (Yale)

  2. Eben Adbo (Grand Ledge)

  3. Jason Downs (New Boston Huron)

  4. Austin Ulberg (Zeeland West)

Ismail Maulazoi (Waverly) 20-9

  1. Braylon Long (Clinton

  2. Carter Moore (Charlotte)

  3. Kingston Stiffler (Williamston)
